THE 2008 Community Champion Awards to recognise the cream of Weston's outstanding talent is up and running.

The awards are organised by Weston Town Council and open to anyone who has made an impact on community life using skill, dedication, example and leadership. There are five categories that the public can nominate someone for. They are: Top Teacher; Young Achiever; The Locking Trophy; Community Champion and Best Pub or Club.

The awards will be presented by the Mayor at the annual town meeting on April 10, at The Blakehay.

The Top Teacher category award is nominated by colleagues, pupils and parents. Any head-teacher, teacher or teaching assistant can be put forward.

The Young Achiever award is for people who have shown a desire to learn to achieve objectives and can relate to sport, charity, education or community service.

The Locking Trophy recognises outstanding achievements in the field of youth work by individuals or youth organisations. This trophy has special significance as it was first presented back in 1968 to the mayor and citizens of Weston by the Royal Air Force, to mark its 50th anniversary.

Community Champion recognises someone who has gone that extra mile to benefit the community in some way.

The final award is for Best Pub or Club and is open for customers or owners to nominate on their own behalf.

Entry forms can be picked up from Weston Town Council and the closing date for entries is Saturday March 1.
