Community Champions of Weston winners announced

A new batch of ‘big-hearted’ community champions were crowned at a ceremony on Weston’s Grand Pier.

Six Westonians were handed Community Champions of Weston awards on Saturday for going above and beyond to make the town a better place.
Organiser Richard Nightingale said: “Again this latest round of community champions highlights how many big-hearted and selfless people there are in Weston.

“I am proud to have lived in Weston all my life and I am also very proud of its community spirted residents. A big thank you for all the nominations and my warmest congratulations to the winners.”
The youngest winner was 18-year-old Alex Crowther for his work setting up the Weston Eagles.

The teen wants to make a difference in the town he grew up in as well as remove the stereotype which is linked to the younger generation.
Another worthy winner was Charles McCann for his work to save the town’s Birnbeck Pier.

Mr McCann has dedicated more than 20 years to the Birnbeck Regeneration Trust and the Friends Of The Old Pier Society.
Weston mum Sara Slee had a pleasant surprise at the ceremony when she was handed a community champion award for her hugely successful Every Child Needs Christmas campaign.

The initiative has handed out more than £115,000 worth of gifts to more than 22,000 children from less fortunate families.
Addaction team leader Jill Foulds nominated Leslie Chandler for being a ‘real inspiration’ to service users.

Mr Chandler overcame his own struggles with drug abuse to become a volunteer and guide to people like him.
Babs Tulip was nominated for being an outstanding citizen and avid volunteer who has helped to raise thousands of pounds for people on the Bournville estate.

She has acted in a variety of roles to help improve the health and wellbeing of the local people.
The final winner was Keith Price, the brains behind the Weston Model Railway Show.
He spotted a gap in the calendar for January and the event has raised more than £48,000 for Weston Hospicecare and £6,000 for the Campus Kids Club.
