Community hub already making a difference to the people of Weston-super-Mare

A new community hub in Weston is proving a huge success, with dozens of people seeking help to get back into work less than a month after it opened.
Team North Somerset works with vulnerable and disadvantaged people who have struggled to gain employment and has been operating since 2014.
However, its growth over the past year has meant it has now been able to open its own community hub, which is based at the Carlton Centre, in Carlton Street.
Team North Somerset collaborates with Weston College, North Somerset Council and Alliance Homes, and a number of other organisations to offer its services.
The hub has now been open for just under a month and Sue Estcourt, operations manager for Team North Somerset, told the Mercury that expectations have been surpassed over recent few weeks.
She said: “We are making a difference already and meeting so many talented people. We have had people who have come in with a talent and even set up their own business, which is amazing.
“What is really important is that this is a process for people. It is not about suddenly getting people a job. It is about taking people on a journey which is right for them.
“Everyone’s journey is different and if people need some sort of training or work experience then that is what we will try to get for them.
“We now have people going out in other parts of North Somerset, as, while this hub is great for people in Weston, there are people who need help in Clevedon, Portishead or Bleadon.
“Not everyone has to come to us, we try to get rid of any barriers people have.
“We really are expanding and we have come so far since we first started in 2014. We just want to give everyone a chance and I think that is what we are doing.”
A careers and work club now takes place at the Carlton Centre at 1.30pm on Mondays and Thursdays, with pre-arranged appointments and activity sessions also available.
