Users of Worle railway station have been left ‘bewildered’ after being issued with two parking tickets despite paying for their stay.

Wendy Watkins, from Banwell, visited the station to get a train to London to visit her father and parked in the North Somerset Council-owned Worle Diamond Batch car park.

She looked up the car park on Google and made a payment using a search for the station on her mobile phone, but upon returning to the car found a pair of tickets slapped on the windscreen.

To provide proof of payment, Wendy handed in an internet receipt with the parking ticket to the council, but received letters a month later stating no payment had been made and the fine had been increased to £100.

She later discovered the internet search only shows details on the APCOA-run site to the north of the station, and has warned other users not to get caught out.

Wendy said: “Unfortunately the new car park on the south side of the station, that leads directly onto the southbound platform, is not Worle Station Car Park (South), as it states on Google Maps.

“An internet search of Worle station car parking only brings up the APCOA car park on the north side.

“The council stated it could not advise us bewildered locals that the proof of payment was not valid, as they did not have our address – which was incorrect as it was on the parking notice.

“The moral of the story – don’t rely on an internet search or Google Maps.”

One of the tickets has been waived on appeal but Wendy is still expected to pay £50 for the other.

A council spokesman said: “We operate Worle Diamond Batch car park, to the south of the station, and there are signs throughout making it clear it is a council car park, and tickets or permits must be purchased from the machines or via MiPermit.

“Each of the tariff boards in the car park clearly state that only tickets and permits purchased from the council are valid.

“There is also a sign on the pedestrian walkway from our car park to the station that everyone using the station passes – including people who have purchased their ticket online – which states only permits bought from the council are valid to use in that car park.”
