Conversation: What's next for ex-gas works?

THE familiar sight of the gas works in Drove Road has been gone for a while now, leaving those on Streetlife to question what the future may hold for the site.
JM started a thread last week asking if anyone knew the future of the site, Liz S said that judging by other threads on Streetlife a ‘park and ride’ or a ‘swimming pool’ may prove popular.
Malcolm B said: “I lived in Taunton when they dismantled their site and it was bare for three years due to contamination, but they then built industrial units on it.”
Jay H said: “Before they took away the gasometer some of us thought a restaurant on top that moved up and down and gave changing views would be a novelty, though probably impractical.”
Housing or land for travellers sites were also put forward as ideas, but Weston local said: “The gas company are keeping it, and it will be for storage, there will be no housing there.”
The Mercury spoke to the utilities firm responsible for the site back in May when a spokesman confirmed there were no plans to redevelop the site.
