FIFTEEN flats will be built on the site of a former Weston hotel after North Somerset Council agreed to provide £225,000 for the project.

Curo Group wants to redevelop the former Bayside Hotel site in Manilla Crescent.

Its scheme – which was awarded planning permission in January – includes three one-bedroom and 12 two-bedroom flats.

The 15 properties would all be made affordable and available for renting. Therefore North Somerset has promised the six-figure sum to help the project, knowing the flats will contribute to the authority’s target of providing an extra 150 affordable homes per year.

A council spokesman said the development would improve that part of Weston.

He added: “We have assessed the proposed scheme and it provides value for money and is a good use of public subsidy.

“This development is in the Birnbeck conservation area and we believe it will enhance the character of that area as well as contributing to the regeneration of the surrounding town centre.”

Fire destroyed the Bayside Hotel in 2011 and the site has remained empty since it was knocked down.

Neighbours have previously called the boarded-up site ‘ugly’.
