North Somerset Council was hit by one cyber attack and one cyber security incident last year.

A Big Brother Watch Report has revealed more than 100 authorities across the UK experienced at least one cyber security incident in the last five years.

The council confirmed 1,878 members of staff are trained in cyber security awareness, which involves mandatory information security training and secure email training.

Based on freedom of information requests, Big Brother Watch found authorities experienced more than 98 million cyber attacks between 2013-17.

A spokesman for the council said: “In this particular case, the attack was low level and our security controls restricted it to one small part of our network.

“No personal information was accessed.

“We continue to be vigilant and are confident that a repeat of the attack in future would not be successful.”
