NORTH Somerset Council is considering selling land near Weston Airfield. The council owns 37 acres at Weston Airfield East Business Park which is often used as a park and ride for major events in the town centre.Councillors have agreed to look at selling the land to a developer to be used for employment as part of the plans for Weston Airfield.Persimmon is hoping to turn the old airfield, now known as Weston Park, into one of the region's biggest business and industrial parks, creating more than 4,000 jobs. Executive member for people and property Councillor Alan Cotton said: "The requirement to have jobs in Weston is absolutely paramount and I trust this will achieve that objective."But councillor Elfan Ap Rees said the decision should not be taken lightly as the site is a great asset to the town.He said: "We acquired this land originally to serve as a sports field so in principal that's something we'd be giving up."This site is used as a park and ride when we have major events in Weston like T4, so lease of this site without appropriate alternative provision could affect the economic regeneration of Weston. "The council needs to take this on board before it actually agrees to release this land. It is a very valuable site in a key position in terms of redevelopment and I hope we don't let it go for anything less than top dollar.
