A PETITION has been launched to urge a council to help make a 30-mile cycle path a reality.

The Strawberry Line Association wants to create a traffic-free path from Clevedon to Shepton Mallet.

The missing piece in the path is a section between Cheddar and Wells and the planning application for that section has been with Somerset County Council for the past four years.

The association’s plan has encountered a stumbling block as the council will not grant planning permission without funding being in place.

The association says it cannot confirm funding until it has planning permission.

A project spokesman said: “Extending the Strawberry Line from Cheddar through to Wells would create a safe, beautiful and sustainable traffic-free path for cyclists, walkers and wheelchair users.

“As a visitor attraction, it would bring money into Somerset villages and towns, and give thousands of children a safe route to school.”

The ‘join the dots’ petition aims to show the council that Somerset residents care about having the Strawberry Line completed.
