COUNCIL workers in North Somerset have called off another strike in protest over Government plans to change their pension scheme.Local Government staff across the South West will boycott work on April 25 as part of a three-day region by region national strike.The strike by members of Unison, the UK's largest union, is over Government plans to scrap a rule that lets some council staff retire on a full pension at 60.A strike on March 28 led to some schools and libraries in North Somerset closing and some council services ground to a halt.UNISON general secretary Dave Prentis said: "Our members and members of ten other public service unions are fed up with being denied equal treatment over pensions."All they want is the same protection that has been offered to every other public sector worker."We are in this for the long-term. This rolling action is part of a campaign of sustained and varying industrial action. "We still hope we can reach an agreement, UNISON has always wanted a negotiated solution, but we are ready to defend our members' pension rights.
