SOMERSET County Council has been awarded the highest rating in the country in an assessment by independent inspectors.

A comprehensive performance review carried out by the Audit Commission awarded the authority a four-star rating for the second year running. The commission also judged the county council to be in the top category for 'improving strongly'.

The council is the only one in the South West to be awarded the two highest accolades, which judges the authority on how it is run, how its services perform, how the council is improving and the value for money it offers.

County council leader Jill Shortland said: "The council prides itself on providing the very best services for the communities of Somerset."

A new flag will be flying outside County Hall in Taunton in recognition of the achievement.
