A COUPLE from Weston are looking to make a big difference as they carry out voluntary work in a country wracked by natural disasters and disease.

Andy and Jutta Cowie, who are members of Milton Baptist Church, have just started a mission in the Caribbean nation of Haiti, which has been devastated by earthquakes, flooding and cholera outbreaks in the past two years.

On June 21 the couple, who were married at the church in Baytree Road in 2009, were commissioned as Cooperative Baptist Fellowship field personnel at a service held in Fort Worth, Texas.

Mr Cowie, aged 40, will be training young men to become mechanics, while Mrs Cowie, aged 43, will teach women’s empowerment through micro enterprise projects.

The couple, who met while working for mission organisation Mercy Ships in Liberia in 2007, will be based in the country’s capital, Port-au-Prince, for the duration of their three year mission.

Mr Cowie said: “Transferring our knowledge and watching others see their potential is a hugely rewarding role and to be able to do it in a Christian context - what more could anyone want?

“This full-time mission is an opportunity to show the love of Jesus through our work.”
