A REMORSEFUL father who attempted to drag a man from a car after a night of drinking says he was 'disgusted' with his behaviour after watching it back on CCTV.

Benjamin Fear appeared at North Somerset Courthouse in St Georges on October 20 charged with an offence of causing fear of unlawful violence.

The 22-year-old pleaded guilty to the offence, which took place in Weston town centre at 1.55am on September 26.

Kevin Blackmore, prosecuting, told the court how Fear had approached a black BMW car in Oxford Street and leaned on the bonnet and stared directly into the vehicle before attempting to drag the driver out.

Fear, who was released from jail in March
and is on licence until November, then began fighting with an unknown man who tried to stop him.

Speaking from the dock, Fear said: “Firstly I want to apologise for what I have done. I saw the CCTV at the police station and I was disgusted with my behaviour.

“I have had a different outlook on life since getting my job. I am the happiest I have ever been as I have a job and I am seeing my little boy.

“I am crying out for help as I don’t want to live that life any more. I have been in and out of jail all my life and although I do understand I need to be punished, I am different now. I have woken up.”

The father-of-one, of Dunster Crescent, Weston, pleaded with magistrate John Goad not to send him back to jail.

Paul Ricketts, defending, said despite Fear’s ‘unenviable list of crimes’ he was battling his issues with alcohol and this was only the second time he had drunk since being released from prison.

Mr Ricketts said: “Mr Fear was heavily intoxicated and he was drunk to the point where he has very little recollection. Being in the town centre is not the issue, it is alcohol he has the issue with.”

Magistrate John Goad sentenced Fear to eight weeks in custody, suspended for 18 months, with a supervision requirement for 18 months. He is also banned from all licensed premises in the resort.
