A PERSISTENT shoplifter has been forced to pay compensation after stealing four bottles of spirits to fund his drug habit.

Jorge Gasspar, aged 42, of Severn Road in Weston, admitted stealing a bottle of Jack Daniel’s from Marks and Spencer in High Street on October 24 last year and returning to the store on December 13, 2014, where he stole another bottle of Jack Daniel’s and two more bottles of gin.

Gasspar was caught out when a security guard recognised him entering the store on December 22 and called the police, a court heard.

Prosecuting, Mae Lee, said: “At interview he admitted the offence and said he intended to sell the items. He said that it was because he was on drugs and he needed the money from selling the alcohol to buy drugs.”

Gasspar appeared at North Somerset Courthouse on Monday and was handed a 12-month conditional discharge, ordered to pay £80 compensation, £80 costs and a £15 surcharge.
