A VANDAL who caused more than £10,000 worth of damage to a Burnham public garden has finally been convicted, nearly two years after the crime was committed.

Jesse Thorne, of Charleston Road, pleaded guilty at Taunton Crown Court to causing the significant criminal damage to Marine Cove on Burnham Esplanade when he was 19, and was handed a 12-month prison sentence.

Two light columns were knocked over, a lantern was shattered and two benches were ripped from their fixings and deposited in the gardens’ pond.

A Sedgemoor District Council spokesman said: “We would like to thank Avon and Somerset police for their diligence with the case and bringing the culprit to justice.”
