AN OFF-DUTY Clevedon policeman heroically pulled a woman from a crumpled car just minutes before it set on fire.PC Phil Kinsella, who is based at the Queen's Road station, was driving home after a night out with his partner when he saw a three vehicle smash in Burrington Coombe near Blagdon and raced to the rescue. The 31-year-old came across a darkly coloured vehicle with two injured passengers stood by it but when he rounded the corner he saw two other cars. One had flames coming from the bonnet and the other, which was touching it, had a woman trapped inside.PC Kinsella said: "As I moved round the corner I saw a yellow vehicle sideways across the road with an unconscious male in the car. Touching it was another car with a male outside calling for help as he couldn't get the car door open to get an injured woman out."When I looked I saw she had a large swelling on her right thigh and she was screaming 'get me out, get me out'."I told the man to go and help the unconscious passenger from the yellow vehicle. After I got the woman out we dragged them both to safety. "At that time I realised I had no mobile phone signal so I told the man to stay with the unconscious male from the yellow vehicle and drove back to the top of the hill to ring the emergency services."When I got back the yellow and the dark vehicles were both alight." PC Kinsella has been hailed a hero at the station. He said: "The guys have been taking the mick a bit but my skipper has been on about putting it all up for a commendation. But I just did what I train to do."I think the member of the public who originally called for my help is more of a hero because he helped and isn't trained."There were six casualties from the crash but no injuries were thought to be life-threatening.The unnamed woman who was pulled from the car was at Bristol Royal Infirmary waiting for an operation on a broken thigh as the North Somerset Times went to press.
