HAZARDOUS material experts were needed to help clear 1,300 litres of spilled diesel from the motorway between Weston and Burnham.
Fire crews were initially alerted to the possibility of a lorry fire between junctions 22 and 21 shortly before 8.30pm yesterday (Thursday).
On arrival at the northbound carriageway, they found the initial reports were wrong – but huge amounts of fuel were leaking from a ruptured fuel tank.
Fire crews from Burnham, Bridgwater and Taunton were all called to help soak up the spillage using 100 giant absorbant pads and clear debris so traffic could move freely again.
