COMMUNITY leaders in a village have vowed to revamp a run-down recreation ground which is a 'magnet for crime'.Banwell parish councillors have said they will tackle the dilapidated area in Westfield Road for youngsters in the village.Proposals include demolishing the boarded-up changing rooms next to the football pitch, replacing the playground equipment and building a BMX area.Plans are also being drawn up for an all-weather pitch with goal posts and a basketball hoop. The BMX trail would be set near Knightcott Road. The council has a budget of £70,000 and hopes to attract a further £50,000 from outside sources such as the Big Lottery Fund to help pay for the transformation. There are also plans to spruce up the children's play area by providing new fencing and repairing or replacing swings.Cllr Nigel Green said residents were signing a petition calling for improvements to be made to the recreation ground.Councillors said the permanent improvements would probably not be completed before summer 2007 but they put forward ideas for temporary measures in the meantime.Chairman Steve Robinson said: "We have to do something practical with the recreation ground, which is redundant, and do something temporary this summer. "There could be a mixture of things with perhaps a smaller football area, a BMX course, and a running or bicycle track."We should demolish the pavilion which is a disgrace and a magnet for crime."Councillors agreed to meet on June 26 in the village hall to discuss the issue. Parish clerk Jo Duffy said the council would welcome views from members of the public at the meeting.
