A 90-year-old housewife died after being involved in a car crash with a vehicle she could not see, an inquest was told this week.

Joyce Bunting was travelling along the A370 Bridgwater Road from Weston-super-Mare towards Burnham-on-Sea in a Ford Fiesta on September 16, 2016 when she collided with Samuel Scarisbrick’s vehicle.

Mrs Bunting died at 5.30am at Southmead Hospital, in Bristol, just four days after the car accident.

An inquest into her death was held at Avon Coroners Court, in Flax Bourton, on Monday afternoon.

Assistant coroner Simon Fox QC determined Mrs Bunting died as a result of multiple injuries sustained in the accident, kidney disease, coronary artery atherosclerosis – a blockage in the arteries which supply blood and oxygen to the heart – and hypotension.

Mrs Bunting, who lived in Highbridge, was driving past Bleadon along the A370 on the day of the accident at around 2.35pm.

The inquest was told lorry driver Dalip Dosti had been making a delivery in Bridge Road, near the Murco garage on the corner where the minor road meets the busy commuter highway.

Dr Fox, speaking to Police Constable Andrew Hill from Avon and Somerset Constabulary’s collision investigation unit, said: “I understand Mr Dosti was trying to make a delivery in a HGV off the A370 in Bleadon and Mr Scarisbrick was at the junction trying to turn right.”

PC Hill told the inquest Mr Dosti was being forced to reverse onto the main road to allow vehicles to pass him by on the small side road.

PC Hill added: “Traffic and the narrowness of the road he was driving down meant he had to reverse and give way.”

Dr Fox confirmed the lorry had obscured both Mrs Bunting’s vision of Mr Scarisbrick, who was driving a Volkswagen Golf, and his vision of the pensioner.

The assistant coroner raised concerns about the junction and asked PC Hill if he needed to start asking more questions about its safety so this sort of accident does not happen again, but the officer said the business Mr Dosti was delivering to is no longer there and there would be ‘no need’ to investigate it.

Dr Fox said: “The events leading up to Mrs Bunting’s death are a result of very unusual circumstances.”

Dr Fox concluded she had died as a result of a road traffic collision.
