A lorry driver from Bristol will appear in court today (Wednesday) accused of causing the death of a man.

Pedestrian Hugh Swain died in June after a collision involving a lorry at a pelican crossing on the A370 in Congresbury.

John Parker, of Fortfield Road in Whitchurch, has been charged with one count of causing death by dangerous driving.

The crash happened on June 9 last year.

Mr Swain lived in Mendip Gardens in Yatton with his wife Maggie. He was 63 years old.

His sister Angela Walker told the Times last summer that his death had come as a ‘tremendous shock’.

Parker, who is 54 years old, is due before magistrates at North Somerset Courthouse in St Georges later this morning.

The severity of the alleged offence means it will ultimately need to be dealt with at the crown court.

North Somerset Courthouse says a ‘not guilty plea is anticipated’.
