A Weston man has been fined after police caught him being drunk and disorderly and angrily threatening motorists in the space of three weeks.

In the past month, an unprovoked Roderick Murray intimidated drivers in broad daylight and had to be removed from a seafront hotel by police officers.

Murray was first arrested on May 13 after police were called out to Premier Inn at about 11.15pm.

Sue Gethin, prosecuting, said: “He was causing a problem and refusing to leave. He was reported to be threatening and unruly.”

Police could tell he was drunk but after they asked him to leave, Murray swore at the officers and left one woman concerned he would attack her car.

Murray soon returned and was arrested after remonstrating with a police officer.

The 58-year-old found himself in trouble again on June 1 when he came out of his home in Sunnyside Road and started threatening drivers.

Ms Gethin said the defendant was at the time wearing a vomit-stained shirt and clearly drunk and approached motorists with his hands clenched and ‘had an aggressive look in his eye’.

Murray admitted one count of being drunk and disorderly and a second of using threatening words but apologised to magistrates for his actions.

He said “That’s not good (behaviour).

“All I can do is apologise profusely and give my solemn undertaking it won’t happen again as it is my intention for the future not to have a drink again.”

North Somerset Courthouse was told on June 2 that Murray has previous convictions for being drunk, but none since 2009.

Murray was fined a total of £160 and told to pay £170 in costs and £30 victim surcharge.

Anna Blackmore, chair of the bench, expressed hope that Murray would learn to curb his drinking in future.

She said: “Perhaps you will learn your lesson that your drinking is a very expensive habit with these fines.”
