A MOTHER accused of beating her daughter with a belt and sticks has been found guilty of one charge, but cleared of another.

The woman, who the Mercury cannot name to protect the identity of the daughter, had pleaded not guilty to the charge of assault and ill-neglect of her daughter and was on trial at Bristol Crown Court.

Although the jury found her guilty of one charge against the girl, relating to when the youngster was aged between seven and 10, they could not reach a verdict on a second charge.

Last week the Mercury reported how the woman from central Weston had appeared charged with beating the daughter with sticks, belts, spoons and other objects if she did not do chores or her homework correctly.

The abuse came to light when the girl told a school friend, who then told a learning support assistant.

A jury at the court found the mother guilty of one charge on January 19, and she is due to be sentenced on February 10.
