A CONCERNED councillor is calling for a zebra crossing to be installed on a busy route to school in Portishead.Councillor Alan McMurray is pressing for a crossing at the junction of St Peter's Road by the Whitecot Stores and Corner Cafe. The route is used by hundreds of children each day to get to Gordano School Cllr McMurray was spurred into action after being contacted by concerned parents who were worried about the safety of their children when crossing the road to get to school. In a letter to Cllr McMurray, a worried parent said: "This has always been a difficult crossing for the many hundreds of children attending local schools."However, with the new mini roundabout and constant illegal parking by the cafe it has now become an accident waiting to happen."Trying to negotiate this crossing with four children is hair-raising as you simply cannot look in three directions at once."The installation of a zebra crossing would greatly reduce the danger and discourage illegal parking here."If we are going to encourage children to walk to school we must provide a safe environment for them to do this."Councillor Alan McMurray has now put the issue on the agenda of the town council recreation and works committee in February. It is likely a site visit will also be organised to assess the problem.Councillor McMurray said: "This route is used by hundreds of children each day as a safe route to school."It is also used by many youngsters using the shop and cafe."We need to ensure their safety and I have spoken to a number of councillors who agree something needs to be done there."Any scheme would have to improve safety but still maintain parking facilities for the store and cafe.
