THOUSANDS of people braved the cold weather for Portishead's Victorian Evening. Stalls lined the streets with charities and community groups all promoting their causes and selling their wares.

Portishead Town Band played carols to the crowds, while people queued for roasted chestnuts and children full of excitement waited to see Santa and tell him how good they have been this year.

The festive street fair is organised each year by Portishead Christmas Lights Committee and raises money towards the town's spectacular illuminations. Committee spokesman Barry Randal said: "We are delighted with the success of the evening and would like to thank the police for their presence. They ensured the evening ran smoothly with no trouble.

"The only slight disappointment this year was the reduced number of traders in Victorian costume. We will be working hard to ensure the Victorian element is improved for next year."
