A WOMAN from Weston will get the chance to carry the Olympic flame after being picked due to her university studies.

Danielle Smith, aged 23, from Milton Park Road, was chosen by the London 2012 Torch Relay Team to carry the torch on May 21 in Lynton after coming up with an environmental project during her time at Exeter University.

Her idea was a ‘BioBlitz’ – part scientific survey, part public engagement exercise - and the scheme saw Danielle organise an event getting people to learn about the environment and find wildlife. Due to her efforts, Danielle was nominated and chosen for the torch relay.

Her mum Shirley said: “I am very, very proud of her. She poured so much effort into the day.”
