BAILIFFS will no longer be able to carry out dawn calls on all people who owe council tax.

As part of a review of North Somerset Council's policy it has been recommended that on the first and second calls they will not be allowed to turn up before 7.30am. Only on the third visit can they turn up at 6.30am.

Other proposals in the review include setting up a dedicated helpline for those who have fallen behind with council tax payments, speeding up the process of getting persistent offenders to court and making information about council tax more accessible for residents.

It says it will work closely with the Citizens Advice Bureau to help people with debt problems and also provide an advice service about the benefits people are entitled to.

The recommendations are due to be enforced from April.
