DELAPIDATED railings at one of Weston's favourite parks will get a makeover after it was announced that refurbishment work will start next year.

North Somerset Council has said work to repaint and refurbish the railings at Ashcombe Park is likely to begin in April next year after the authority agreed to include the work in its next budget.

The work will be carried out by offenders in the Community Payback team, and will see the most run-down areas of the park’s boundary restored to their former glory.

Town councillor Mark Canniford said of the decision: “This is great news, as we have been campaigning to have the railings repainted since 2003.

“If this work wasn’t carried out we may have been reduced to fitting a wooden fence around to replace the railings, and that would have been a huge shame. I also think it is great to see offenders who have hurt society giving something back through this project.”
