A horsebox has overturned on the M5 causing six miles of traffic near Weston-super-Mare.

The accident occurred this lunchtime on the northbound side between junction 21 and junction 20 (Clevedon).

Highways England says one lane is currently affected, but has warned motorists of delays of up to two-and-a-half in the area.

It says traffic is building around junction 21 and affecting people trying to get on the northbound slipway from the A370.

Unconfirmed reports suggest a horse is trapped as a result.

A Highways England spokesman said: “Emergency services are currently dealing with an incident on the M5 between junctions 21 and 20 northbound.

“An overturned horsebox has led to the closure of two lanes and delays of more than 20 minutes from the junction are currently being reported.

“Drivers are advised to leave at junction 22 (Burnham-on-Sea) and then follow the A38 to Bristol, or leave at junction 21 and follow the A370 to Bristol.”
