A dementia specialist nurse has been employed at Weston General Hospital.

Sarah Oakwood has taken on the new role as an admiral nurse for the Weston Area Health NHS Trust (WAHT) and she will make sure people diagnosed with dementia, as well as their carers and families, have access to the best possible support they can.

Sarah has more than 20 years of experience in dementia care and has led a number of projects and helped develop new services and ways of working.

Admiral nurses are specialists who deal with dementia.

Sarah said: “I am immensely proud to be offered this important role within dementia care at the hospital.

“Becoming an admiral nurse is something I have been passionate about for a while so I am excited to see how this role will develop.”

Director of nursing, Sarah Dodds said it was a ‘successful appointment’ for WAHT.

There are 249 admiral nurses in the UK, but only 11 working in acute hospital settings.
