The family of the late Derek Mead plans to ‘celebrate his achievements and continue his legacy’ after a coroner ruled he was killed in a ‘tragic’ farming accident caused by his dog.
An inquest at Avon Coroners Court, in Flax Bourton, yesterday (Friday) heard the well-respected businessman, farmer, philanthropist and politician died after being crushed against a gate by a forklift truck-style vehicle at his Hewish home in June 2017.Mr Mead’s death shocked the town, with tributes pouring in to hail his wide-ranging work and achievements.
And after his cause of death was confirmed by assistant coroner Dr Peter Harrowing, Mr Mead’s loved ones issued a fresh tribute their ‘dad, grandfather and friend’.
A family statement said: “We have been processing the tragic and sudden loss of our father. It has been a very difficult time for us and for all of those who knew our father well.
“While we grieve for the loss of our dad, grandfather and friend, we celebrate everything he has achieved and focus on continuing his legacy.
“We want to express our deepest gratitude for the support and all the kind wishes we have received during this difficult time from so many people which dad reached out to.
“We thank you for continuing to respect our privacy as we, as a family, continue to grieve.”
At the inquest, Dr Harrowing told the court it was a ‘very tragic accident’, concluding Mr Mead’s Jack Russell likely knocked a lever while the handbreak was off which caused the vehicle to move forward and pin the 70-year-old against a gate.
