Fire crews were alerted last night (Tuesday) after a woman’s car plunged into a Somerset river.

Teams from Burnham-on-Sea and Bridgwater were called to Rooksbridge Road, Rooksbridge, and upon arrival they found the woman had managed to free herself from the crash, and she was being dealt with by police.

A Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: “Two fire appliances from Burnham-on-Sea and a specialist rescue team from Bridgwater were all mobilised to reports of a car in to a river with one person still within the water at the above location.

“On arrival, crews confirmed one female had self-rescued and was in the hands of the police.

“Crews used a triple extension ladder and waterproof gear to check there were no other occupiers still within the vehicle. Thankfully, there were no other people involved.”
