A town centre toilet block has been deliberately set on fire.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service was called to Highbridge yesterday (Tuesday) afternoon shortly before 2.45pm.

A member of the public had seen smoke billowing out from the toilets in Bank Street and phoned the emergency services.

A spokesman for the fire service said the toilets have been damaged.

They added: “Two appliances were mobilised to the incident from the local station.

“On arrival crews stated smoke was issuing from the toilet block.

“Crews got to work with two breathing apparatus, one hose reel jet and a thermal imaging camera.

“It is believed the fire was started deliberately.

“It caused 10 per cent fire damage and 40 per cent smoke damage to the building.”
