A DARING dog has become the mascot of a group of swimming enthusiasts after suddenly developing a passion for having a splashing time in the sea off Portishead. Eight-year-old Lucky has always been content to watch from the comfort of dry land as her owner, June Seville, takes a regular dip off Sugar Loaf Beach. But this summer, the border collie has been taking the plunge with June every time she joins other members of Portishead Loafers for a swim. The mother-of-two's four-legged friend dives into the water as soon as she sees her putting on her swimming cap and makes a beeline for a buoy a quarter of a mile away. For 15 minutes, her furry frame can be seen bobbing among the waves before she scrambles to the shore and perches on a rock to watch her mistress swim back to safety. The pedigree pooch, whose chosen stroke is doggy paddle, has become such a favourite with the swimming enthusiasts, she has become their mascot. Now June, who had breast cancer five years ago, is urging animal lovers across the district who admire her pet's pluck to make donations to fund research into the potentially-fatal disease.June said: "Lucky used to run along the beach as I swam, but for some reason, she's suddenly become a real waterbaby."Swimming three or four times a week keeps me really fit and well, and now Lucky enjoys the benefits too."Her swimming technique may be rather elementary, but it's incredibly effective."She's always well ahead but she keeps swimming back to me to make sure I'm following her."Anyone who would like to make a donation to Breakthrough Breast Cancer is invited to call June on 01275 848008.Portishead Loafers swim in the sea off Sugar Loaf Bay every day, tidal conditions permitting.
