THE war against drugs in Weston has reached a significant stage after police announced the results of another successful campaign on the town’s streets.

Avon and Somerset Police had made more than 6,000 separate seizures this year, including some massive hauls in Weston and the surrounding areas.

Two recent successes have resulted from warrants executed earlier this year, and in one case a five-year prison sentence was handed out.

Police raided a house at Milton Brow in March and discovered 40 wraps of crack cocaine and heroin.

Ian Sinclair, aged 26, was given the hefty prison sentence at Bristol Crown Court in October – which police say sends out a strong message to other dealers.

In another drugs bust 69 wraps of crack cocaine were found at a property in Walliscote Road, and Jason Morgan, aged 20, was sentenced to 30 months in jail.

Detective Sergeant Pete Frake said: “These are significant sentences and should send a strong message to others that Avon and Somerset Police take a robust approach in dealing with individuals who supply drugs and harm to the local community.”

As a whole, police have seized 15.4kgs of cocaine, 11.5kgs of heroin and around 30,000 cannabis plants in the force area this year.

This is the biggest haul in the region and officers say they are on target to net even a larger amount over the next 12 months.

The success is based largely on a series of operations targeting drug dealers, including Viscount, a three-month campaign launched in April, and Beacon, which began in July.

As part of Operation Viscount, 20 cannabis plants worth 30,000 were seized at an address in Argyle Avenue on the Bournville estate in May, and in August police found 45 cannabis plants following a raid in Lonsdale Avenue, on the same estate.

Paul Bunt, drug strategy manager, said: “Keeping our communities safe and feeling safe is a priority and there is no doubt that tackling our illegal drugs market is key to achieving this.”

Anyone with concerns about drug dealing in their community is urged to ring police on 0845 456700 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
