A RUSSIAN shop in Weston has proved to be so popular it is attracting customers from all over the South West. The store, in Richmond Street, opened about a year ago and has hit upon a growing market of eastern European customers.Called y Ubaha, it sells all sorts of books, DVDs, cheese, meat, tinned foods, drinks and other products from Russia, Poland and Lithuania.Co-owner Elena Anastasova is from southern Russia, near the Black Sea. The 25-year-old set up the shop with her Greek husband John. The mother-of-two said: "We have lots of customers who are originally from Poland, Lithuania, Ukraine, Latvia and Russia."Many have moved here to work and some are married to English people."But we have very few English customers. I think English people are less keen to buy such different food."The produce is bought from large import warehouses in London and is not available in traditional English supermarkets."Every month there are more and more people coming to the shop. As the number of eastern Europeans increases in Weston, so does our custom. "Each Polish person who comes here will tell their friends and through word of mouth the business keeps growing."Because of information on the internet we are also getting customers from outside Weston, from places such as Wells, Cardiff and Bristol."People like to buy products they are familiar with and, if trade keeps increasing, we will certainly look at expanding.
