A SOMERSET school has received an award recognising the high level of internationalism in its teaching.
Axbridge First School applied for the award from the British Council, the UK’s international cultural relations body.
The award comes after the school recently held a series of international events, including a French Olympics afternoon which saw year eight children visit from Fairlands Middle School in Cheddar for a French sport workshop with Axbridge’s year three and four pupils.
Youngsters also enjoyed a visit from an African dancer, who ran workshops with children and parents, teaching them a traditional dance.
The school has been handed the foundation level award, but headteacher Lorna Richardson hopes forging a link with a foreign school will help them reach the next stage, intermediate.
She said: “It is important to show off the efforts everyone at the school has made to increase international teaching and promote the idea of becoming a global citizen.”
