BROADOAK Mathematics and Computing College has applied for academy status, despite bosses saying they are unsure they want it.

The school in Loxton Road is the latest in North Somerset to apply to the Government to convert into an academy.

The move, which would leave the school free from local and national government control, would provide greater independence and financial control.

But headteacher Shelagh Pritchard said the application did not necessary imply intent by the school to convert into an academy.

She said following numerous academy status applications by other schools in the area, she did not want the school to miss out on funding if it did make the switch.

Any school which makes the conversion is currently provided a 25,000 government grant, but it is unclear how long this will last.

She said: “I must point out this is at a very early stage, we are not yet sure if we really want to go ahead with the application.

“We must consult parents and investigate the move before any firm decision is made.”

So far in the town, Wyvern Community School has converted into the Hans Price Academy, while Priory Community School has put an application in.
