Pupils from a Weston-super-Mare secondary school became news reporters for the day as part of a national BBC project.

Students in year 10 at Broadoak Mathematics and Computing College were transformed into hard-hitting newsreaders for the day on March 16 when they took part in the BBC News School Report day.

The initiative sees pupils aged 11-16 across the country present news stories on camera to live audiences, while teachers help them hone their journalistic skills and transform them into ‘school reporters’ for the day.

The 47 Broadoak pupils, who are all sitting exams in media studies, covered a range of news items throughout the day.

Their topics ranged from world news, politics and sport to community issues affecting people in Weston and the surrounding area.

A spokesman for the Windwhistle Road school said: “They spent the morning researching the day’s news using a variety of different sources, including all national newspapers.

“They planned their scripts and then practised presenting to camera.

“The final films were edited by one of the students and will be available to view on the Broadoak website.”
