Sporty students were celebrated at a swanky ceremony this month, with a former international rugby star on hand to congratulate the winners.
Churchill Academy hosted its annual sports awards gala at Congresbury’s DoubleTree by Hilton, Cadbury House hotel on October 11, and there celebrated the successes of those pupils who best showcased their athletic skills.
Bristol Bears head coach Pat Lam, who represented Samoa and New Zealand in the 1990s, was the star speaker and had the 320 pupils hanging on every word with his speech.
Guest of honour Tom Stabbins, a former pupil who had part of his leg amputated after a serious illness in year eight, spoke movingly about his experiences and his bid to earn a spot on the British paraclimbing squad.
Headteacher Chris Hildrew said the ceremony was the best the school had put on and it was a ‘glittering celebration of sport at the academy’.
