CHILDREN from a North Somerset village took part in a traditional celebration on Friday.

Churchill Primary School pupils hung paper pieces of toast off a small tree in a bid to attract the good spirits and tambourines were played to ward off the evil spirits.

The tradition dates back to early Pagan times when rural communities would perform ceremonies in January to encourage a healthy apple harvest later that year.

Interactive games were played to teach children about the wassail and a ceremonial king and queen were crowned.
