BACKWELL School is fighting back against thieves by marking valuable property with special codes.

The school has suffered several break-ins over the past few years and staff and the neighbourhood beat team have taken action to prevent it from happening again.

Officers visited the school to mark computers, laptops, projectors, interactive whiteboards and musical instruments with SmartWater.

SmartWater, which is featured in popular TV programmes such as CSI and The Bill, is a colourless liquid which glows under ultraviolet light and cannot be removed.

Each bottle contains a unique chemical code which is registered to a particular organisation or individual making it easy to trace the owner in the event of theft.

Headteacher Julian Baldwin said the school was pleased to be working with the police to try to prevent crime.

He added: "We are always looking for effective ways to improve our security and are grateful for their support in this.

"All our valuable equipment is now SmartWater marked. The students have been fascinated to see how Smart works and we plan to include it in science lessons.
