AN 'EXCEPTIONAL' new £14million building for a Weston academy has been handed over, nine weeks earlier than expected.
Construction firm Willmott Dixon has been building a new school for Hans Price Academy in Marchfields Way since last April.
The keys to the new building were presented to school leaders on Tuesday.
Speaking at the opening, David Carter, chief executive of the Cabot Learning Federation which sponsors the academy, said: “The building is really important and a pivotal part of the development of the federation.
“When we decided to sponsor the school, we wanted to do a number of things.
“It is about raising standards for young people at the school, but also building something exceptional for the town.
“It is a landmark building. The people of Weston deserve something as good as this.”
Sir Carter said the old building was no longer fit for purpose.
He said: “The environment couldn’t be more different to the older building.
“We wanted to build it so it could be seen from the main road. It is one of the first big buildings you see when you drive into the town and it is a big statement to make for Hans Price.”
Principal Armando Di-Finizio, who leaves the academy tomorrow (Fri), said he was happy with how it looked.
He said: “It has all been designed with learning in mind.
“The space is very flexible for small groups or bigger classes and there are lots of open spaces for independent study.
“It will enable us to personalise learning, and to work with each child and their needs.”
