SMILES were sprawled across faces at Churchill Academy and Sixth Form this morning as teenagers collected their GCSE results.

Deputy headteacher Mark Branch said he was ‘delighted’ with the ‘outstanding’ results.

An impressive 84 per cent of pupils achieved five A*-C grades, of those 71 per cent included an A*-C grade in English and maths, an improvement on last year’s results.

Mr Branch said: “It’s the first time we’ve broken the 70 per cent barrier, we have had a high performance in English and also an excellent performance in all of what we call the non-core subjects, with most making at least a five per cent increase.

“They are a very good crop of students and we are expecting a very good future for them.”

See next week’s Mercury for interviews with students and more pictures from the day.
