CURIOUS schoolgirls from across North Somerset were given an insight into the world of science on Friday.

About 250 children attended a Skirting Science event at Weston’s Hans Price Academy.

A wide variety of interactive and hands-on workshops were set up to help encourage young women to embark upon a career in the subject, and it was organised by Weston Soroptimists, Aspire Partnership and the school itself.

Pupils from Churchill, Worle, and Priory Community School, among others, attended and workshops ranged from earthquake engineering, cider science, radiography and blood sciences, to sustainable solutions, the chemistry of perfume and the anatomy.

Ruth Thomas, from Skirting Science, said: “There was a real buzz at the event on Friday.

“The students who attended were very enthusiastic about the hands-on workshops and they learnt that girls really can have exciting and interesting careers as scientists and engineers.”
