GIRLS got hands-on with science at one school on Thursday when an annual women-only event came to Weston.

Skirting Science, run by Soroptomists of Weston, has been held in the town for five years and aims to get young women into all things scientific.

Broadoak Mathematics and Computing College hosted the event, which saw more than 160 year nine girls from all over the county take part in three of 14 available science and technology workshops.

Girls found out how to make perfume and how to design and build a robot, learned the properties of nanomaterials and build an air engine.

Organiser Ruth Thomas said: “Skirting Science has been extremely successful this year and the feedback from the girls and their teachers very positive.

“One girl said that she has realised that science can be more exciting than just equations and lab coats.”
