A new primary school big enough for hundreds of pupils could soon be built to serve one of Weston-super-Mare’s newest communities.

St Modwen, in partnership with the Homes and Communities Agency, is hoping to build the new school off Locking Moor Road to serve the ever-growing Locking Parklands.

Children living in the Parklands currently go to the primary school in Locking village, which expanded to take on another 100 pupils in 2013 to meet the demand.

The new school will include a nursery for 30 children and will have facilities for community use, including a playing field and all-weather pitch.

Access to the school will come from a new link road which is being built by North Somerset Council to connect the Parklands to the motorway.

Locking Parklands Primary School will cater for 420 pupils – but the plans include room for a possible future extension to allow for 630 pupils, although a new planning application would be needed for this.

Associated Architects, which has drawn up the designs, said: “The school and nursery will provide pupil places to the occupants of the 1,450 new homes as well as for existing and new residents in the surrounding area.

“The school will be strongly committed to promoting community cohesion in the wider communities it serves, bringing together both the new and established communities in the immediate area.

“The school will continually strive for educational excellence.

“Locking Parklands Primary School will provide access to a broad range of curricular experience and best practice.”

Educate Together Academy Trust revealed it would be the sponsor of the school, which will be the second academy operated by the trust. The trust’s first school is in Redfield, Bristol, which opened in temporary accommodation in September 2014.

Chief executive Paul Rowe said: “We are sure we can deliver an excellent modern learning environment for children and ensure that the school fits in with the special characteristics of this development.”
