A BUSINESS apprenticeship scheme run by Avon and Somerset Police will help six lucky people to kick-start their careers.

Applications are now open for the 2012 programme which will teach apprentices a wide range of skills as well as an industry-recognised qualification in business administration.

Apprentices, who will work closely with the force, can be from Weston, Portishead or Bristol.

Robert Fortune, aged 19, praised the scheme for its help in boosting his prospects.

He said: “It has changed my life in so many positive ways. I left the sixth form with good grades but wasn’t sure about going to university. After applying for various jobs with little success – they all wanted experience – I came across the scheme online.

“I’ve always been interested in the police and being accepted on the scheme was the best thing ever.

“I started out doing basic clerical work and organising interview tapes. That soon led to being given more responsibility, dealing with the public and gaining more experience.

“If you prove yourself, the opportunities are fantastic. My advice to anyone thinking about it is apply and get stuck in.”

Jade Nicholls, aged 22, from Portishead, who now works as a Personal Assistant, said: “After completing my A-levels I didn’t really know what I wanted to do, so when I heard about the scheme I thought why not give it a go?.

“From day one, I loved it – there was so much to learn, the work is interesting and the team was really friendly.

“Having gained my NVQ level two in Business Administration, I’m now working towards level three.

“I wouldn’t think twice about recommending it to others.”

Emma Zeeman, police spokesman, said: “In the current financial climate finding a job is tough, particularly if you don’t have the necessary work experience.

“We’re delighted to be running the Apprenticeship Scheme again so more people can gain important skills and a qualification which will really help start their careers.”

Applications for the scheme close on November 4.

Successful candidates will start work in January.
