Primary school league tables published

The Key Stage Two results stem from SATs tests taken by children aged 10-11 earlier this year.

Under the coalition Government standards have been raised, with schools now expected to have at least 60 per cent of pupils achieving the expected Level 4 in both maths and English - up from 55 per cent last year.

Schools that miss the target face intervention and possible take-over, closure or being converted into an academy, although the Government says it will look at the unique circumstances of each school.

On top of that, schools are measured on how much progress pupils make between the ages of seven and 11.

Another change this year meant that science tests were no longer mandatory.

In the Mercury coverage area, seven schools dropped below the new Government standard set for the number of pupils achieving a Level 4 in English and maths.

Christ Church Primary School topped the table with 97 per cent, the highest score achieved in North Somerset, and St Joseph’s Primary School in Burnham followed close behind with 94 per cent.

Court de Wyck Primary School in Claverham came bottom with just 29 per cent of pupils achieving the expected standard.

The overall average for North Somerset came out at 73 per cent and in Somerset, the average was 75 per cent.

As well as the results obtained this year, schools have been analysed on the progress their pupils have made in English and maths between Key Stage One and Two.

In North Somerset, 82 per cent of pupils have made the progress expected in English and 81 per cent have made the progress expected in maths.

In Somerset, 85 percent met the improvement standard for English and 84 per cent met the improvement standard for maths.

Blagdon Primary School showed the best result in this data with all pupils achieving the expected progress in both English and maths.

Not all schools are included in this year’s league tables due to the fact some boycotted the SATs tests following a campaign by headteachers across the country.

The schools that did not take part in the SATs were East Huntspill School, Bournville Primary School in Weston, Burrington Primary School, Milton Park Primary School in Milton and Uphill Primary School.

Next year, the Government aims to assess schools using a new method and has ordered a review of the current system, which it has deemed as flawed. The Government has said it wants parents to have more information on their child’s progress instead.

In response to the league table results Court de Wyck Primary School headteacher Nick Riddiough said: “Court de Wyck is recognised as being a good school and this group of children and all the teachers worked really hard to make great progress despite the cohort having an exceptionally high level of Special Education Need.

“We place a great deal of importance on Teacher Assessments which measure pupils’ attainment across a wide range of work throughout the year.

“They give a much clearer indication of a child’s true ability than a 45 minute exam.

“Our Teacher Assessments have been externally validated as being accurate and show our pupils’ attainment to be good.

“Unfortunately, we are victim of an unfair and misleading system of reporting on schools which pays little regard to the wider context of the school or the impact that teaching has on the pupils’ learning.”
