A PRIVATE secondary school is expected to be given the green light today (Thurs) to press ahead with plans for a new sports facility.

Sidcot School wants to build two all-weather sports pitches, create more parking spaces and install floodlights.

North Somerset Council’s south area committee was expected to approve the plans last month but the decision was deferred to allow extra consultation with Winscombe residents over opening hours.

The council has received dozens of objections to the plans, amid concerns over an increase in traffic and the visual impact it would have.

However headteacher Iain Kilpatrick has told residents they will benefit from the new pitches which will allow Winscombe’s ladies’ hockey side to play home matches in the village for the first time in more than 20 years.

The committee will meet at Weston’s Town Hall at 6pm tonight.
