School pupils take on Olympic challenge

SIBLINGS from Sidcot School in Winscombe took part in a competition which saw them swim in Olympic waters.

James and Freya King, who live in Cheddar and attend the school in Oakridge Lane, qualified to take part in the GB Schools Modern Biathlon Championships.

The competition is designed to encourage as many children as possible to get involved in sports, and involves a swim and run for different age groups.

James and Freya swam in the London Aquatics Centre in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, the same waters as team GB medallists Rebecca Adlington and Michael Jamieson trained in.

Freya, aged 11, ran 800m and swam 50m in a combined time of three minutes 43 seconds, while brother James, aged 13, ran 1,600m and swam 100m in seven minutes 20 seconds to qualify.

Freya competed first with a the swim followed by a run on the concourse outside.

She ranked a swim of 32 seconds and a run of three minutes, finishing 64th out of 117.

James took part a run followed by the swim, completing the run in six minutes and the swim in one minute, finishing 39th out of 80 entries.
